Alby Cat Books the Series

1 - Books Leanne Davidson Author - ‘Alby and the Cat’ series, about Alby the guide dog and the fat, fluffy (very spoilt), annoying cat that lives next door.  These books are inspired by my Dad, who was blinded in an industrial accident in 1979 and had the services of a beautiful black guide dog named Duke who helped him regain his independence and get him out into the world again. They had a beautiful relationship, and Duke absolutely doted on Dad.  When he was in harness Duke was working and literally had Dad’s life in his paws, but once the harness was taken off he was able to be petted, as you would a pet.  But people had no idea how to act around Dad now that he was blind, and they thought that because Duke was a Labrador, they could just come up at any time and pat him because Labs have the reputation of being so people-friendly.  However, when that harness is on it is imperative guide dogs are not distracted.
Leanne wanted to write some stories to raise awareness of not only guide dogs, how they are trained to do the wonderful job they do, and how important they are in the lives of a visually impaired person but also to highlight the hurdles that people with disabilities face every day.
These books are available in paperback, Kindle via Amazon and itunes.

These Alby Cat books were nice and clear, easy to read and well written. From the children's point of view they still had pictures so weren't considered too grown up and the author’s sense of humour was enjoyable. I have already recommended these to friends with children. A thoroughly enjoyable read for the whole family.

Babar's Guide to Paris

1 - Books
Babar's Guide to Paris By Laurent de Brunhoff
Babar the elephant, one of the most loved and classic characters in children’s literature, showcases his favourite parts of the City of Lights in this memorable trip to Paris. Laurent de Brunhoff’s Paris is filled with charming elephants on every page as they enjoy all the sights and sounds of one of Europe’s most popular cities. This all-new full-colour picture book, rendered in beautiful watercolours, evokes the classic feel of the bestselling Babar’s Museum of Art, and it will become a must-have read for fans of Babar, those planning a family trip to Paris and anyone new to the wondrous world of Babar. When Babar’s youngest daughter, Isabelle, heads to Paris on her own for the first time, he tells her how to enjoy the iconic city to the fullest. Babar recommends food, including cafes, street markets and brassieres; he also offers the best sightseeing tips, especially observing the Eiffel Tower from every angle, walking along the banks of the Seine, visiting the Louvre and Orangerie museums, and exploring the Luxembourg Gardens. There’s even a postcard-perfect opening scene that features the Babar family visiting the Notre Dame Cathedral on a previous trip. Babar also gives local advice. He tells Isabelle how apartment buildings work, why an elephant may be surprised by the size of a lift, how to take the metro, how to find a restaurant to call your own, and to walk - walk as much as possible to see everything that Paris has to offer. In the end, Isabelle is encouraged to enjoy her travels, but she is also lovingly reminded to always come home to Celesteville and her family. Like other classic children’s books featuring international adventures, including Madeline in London and Eloise in Paris, readers will be eager to take the trip to Paris with Babar.
I would certainly recommend this book. We really enjoyed reading this high quality book and looking at the beautiful illustrations, it makes me want to go back to Paris to take the children.

Chikin and Scrub By Ingrid Botha

1 - Books
Chikin and Scrub, a wonderful, new children’s story by Ingrid Botha, provides young readers with a high-speed adventure book that focuses on the lives of three rather unique mice. The setting is the dark and dingy sewer tunnels that run beneath the city of London. It’s not a pleasant place to call home, yet a community of mice have lived there for what seems like an eternity—most of them unaware that there is another kind of life outside, a life free of the tyranny of KAT. Scrub is a delightful little mouse who gets his name from his fanatical scrubbing of everything. A bit timid, he dislikes the darkness of the sewers and wonders if outside more light can be found. He also hopes to discover what happened to his beloved mother, who mysteriously vanished. Scrub relies greatly on Chikin, a daring little mouse who has decided that one day she wants to become a chicken! When the two escape, they meet up with the streetwise Rat—a bold, fearless, and eternally optimistic sort. It’s a connection that just may provide the ticket to their dreams. "Chikin and Scrub is the most charming adventure of two little mice who escape the power of KAT and travel the streets of London looking for a place to belong. An exciting and unpredictable tale children will love.” – Joyce Norman, Author & Publisher
Botha’s inspiration for Chikin and Scrub came one day as she watched a ray of light splash across a wall. ‘I had an urge to stand in the light just to feel the ray on my face, and that’s when the idea came to me. I wondered what it must feel like if you’ve never had sunshine on your face, and how it would change your way of thinking once you had felt it.’
Suitable for children aged 7-9 years
I would recommend this product to others. It is a very well written story, good quality and interesting for this age group. Overall we were both very impressed.

Our Farmyard Friends: A 'Rhyme and Sign' Adventure

1 - Books The Sun's going down and it's time for bed, but before the farmer can rest her head ... Join the busy farmer on her evening journey across the fields collecting weary animals who are looking forward to bedtime. Meet new farmyard friends as they clamber on board the tractor.... there's a tired old sheep, a muddy pig and even a hen in a hurry! Accompanied by British Sign Language Graphics, this cleverly illustrated book shows you how to communicate key words of the story through sign language as well as spoken words. You won't need any signing experience to be able to use this book; those who have children with hearing impairments as well as those who adore baby signing will delight in it's easy to use format and beautiful storyline. When sign language is used simultaneously with speech, children learn to connect both the sign and word. Research has shown that this connection helps to provide children with a head start in communication, literacy and language. This way the pictures of the signs in the book act as an aide memoire rather than a detailed instruction. I would purchase this book. My daughter likes the signs on Mr Tumble and this is like that. I would recommend and I am thinking of buying it as a gift for a friend's daughter as she also enjoys Mr Tumble. A great, fun and colourful book to help learn the signs for the different animals. I did baby signing with my eldest daughter and this would have been great to support her learning. A fun, colourful book that the children will want to read again and again to perfect their signs and recite the story by heart.

The Befana Drama Book

1 - Books The Befana Drama by Gianna Hartwright is sprinkling witch-dust of the most wondrous kind across the world as its thrilling global adventure by broomstick introduces youngsters to the amazing and charmed world of VIPBs (Very Important Present Bringers).

The book, for children aged 8+, weaves together the festive traditions of Italy (the Befana) and folklore surrounding Santa.  The old witch called the Befana, is in the middle of sorting out her coal and candy present drops and her beloved festival when she learns that her postbox is being sealed up and her festival downsized, "with a view to then cancelling it indefinitely.” When she hears Santa, to whom she once became engaged at a VIPB conference, is taking over her patch and also now has a wife called Mrs Claus, her rage sends candy balls bouncing down the street!

Bear this humiliation she will not and so she charges up her broomstick with tuber-power and travels around the world in a quest to regain the hearts of Italian children by collecting enough coal and candy to take over Santa’s present delivery run.

The Cowboy Who Was Scared of Horses By Michelle Path

1 - Books The rodeo is about to arrive in town and all the cowboys want to impress the cowgirls with their riding skills.Cowboy Marty lives on Seven Star Ranch and rides a bicycle to do his chores. He wants to impress the cowgirls too but there is just one problem: he is secretly scared of horses. To stop anybody finding out, he puts an advert in the local newspaper asking for help.To his surprise, a skilled rider named Marjorie shows up on his ranch and is willing to teach him to ride. However, Marty has skills of his own. Can he teach her some valuable lessons in return? With a passion for horses and dressage, Michelle has written this book to show a less serious side of the equine world, which she hopes both horsey and non-horsey people will enjoy. In bringing together two completely different styles of riding and viewpoints, she hopes to emphasise that there is no right or wrong way of riding, and that horses can be enjoyed no matter what they are used for.

Having been given some pot-pourri as a present he tries to drink the essential oil but Scampi saves him just in time, knocks over a candle and causes a fire, goes to use some plastic washing pouches for eating as jellies and swallows some "sweets" he finds in the medicine cabinet in the bathroom.
