All Around Bustletown: Nighttime Book

Bustletown’s many fans will delight in this nocturnal return trip, which finds the village’s beloved people, animals, and streetscapes as fun and busy as ever.

No matter what time of year, the inhabitants of Bustletown are busy working, walking, playing, eating, making music, exercising, and shopping. Now, even though it’s nighttime, the fun hasn’t stopped. Just as Berner’s previous explorations of the town have brilliantly evoked the sights and colors of the seasons, here she bathes the town in shimmering darkness that throws evening activities into fascinating relief. Seven colorful and incredibly detailed spreads take readers inside a multigenerational house, a farm, a railway station, a community center, a marketplace, a department store, and a park with a lake. Readers will return again and again to these pages to discover everything that takes place in Bustletown during the late hours: a burglar tries to break into the dental office, the bookshop features »books for a good night,« fireworks explode above the lake, and a slumber party is raging in the library. And as they search on each page for their favorite returning characters, they’ll create their own stories about all the things you can do after the sun sets.

I liked that it was large and it looked inviting although initially I was concerned that it was just a picture book and there were no words. I am not sure whether I would have purchased it knowing there were no words. The front was really inviting and my daughter looked excited at it.  She has really enjoyed it. We have used it as a bit of a what can you see and we made up stories of what the different people were doing which she really enjoyed. It was really nice to have mini stories following through from one to page so you can follow what’s happening to different people. Initially I didn’t notice on the back that there was a bit of direction of what to look for but we had looked for them ourselves. My daughter has really enjoyed the book and we have looked at it for long periods of time and she repeatedly wants to go back to it. The illustrations really did bring the story to life.  It was really nice to have common themes across the pages and the illustrations were really appealing and interesting. This has not inspired out daughter to create her own stories yet as we haven’t got to that point yet, but she has enjoyed discussing the different things happening such as the man in the tent and that is something we will reference in the future. At the moment once every couple of days on average. Sometimes she goes to it a few times in the same day. I think she likes the memory part. So turning goes and then she can explain what different people are doing to me, based on things we have talked about before. We also treat like a “can you see the yellow bus” and she likes doing that. Lots of interesting things to look at on each page and the running stories across the pages were great for making up stories and enhancing her creativity. At the moment we look at it at least every couple of days, as she is really enjoying it. We really enjoyed the quality. The book itself feels like it will last a long time even if she was quite rough with it. Really good illustrations, engaging and nice to look at. Plenty of things to see on every page, I still feel like we find something new to look at every time and when I ask her what things are the images are clear enough that she knows. I think it is good value, considering the size and quality of it. It is nice and different on other books she has but she has been as engaged with this as with any book. I would definitely buy more in the series. As I said, initially I was unsure whether having no words would make the book boring for my daughter but having seen how much she likes it I would definitely buy another like this as it is different to any others she has. I would recommend as engaging, different to normal books, good quality, enhances her creativity, can be looked at independently or with someone. Really enjoyed it and so did my daughter. Feels like it has longevity and she will happily keep going back to it for a long time yet. Greta pictures, good stories running through each page, lots of different things to look at and discuss. When this arrived looked a large book. The cover was inviting and my son was excited to look at the book. I think because it was just pictures he made up his own stories. The night time antics caught his attention a little bit. I would not say it kept him entertained as much as other books as now he wants to read and this is a picture book. The illustrations are really lovely. This did inspire him to create his own stories, but the book did bore him a bit unfortunately. We have tried 3 times, unfortunately pictures and making up his own stories isn’t the same as reading a book. My son really enjoyed making up stories. I thought the pictures were lovely. The quality of the book is very good. Lots of detailing in the illustrations. It is good value, but maybe should be aimed at a younger market.  I would not buy any more books in the series as I don’t think it’s the right book for a 4 year old who is in school. I would personally not purchase this book even though I think it is a great book. I think this book is great if your child is younger and wants to make up stories. Hayley Russell – Jacob 4 Years

I was really impressed with the look of the book and the front cover certainly caught Arthur’s eye and he wanted to find out more. I was not aware this did not feature words but the more we looked at the book the more we would discover. Arthur has really enjoyed looking at this picture book and we would look at each picture in great detail and talk together about what we though was going on. My son loved the different images showing different things happening all over the town.  This really helped him to observe and get creative and make up his own stories.  I honestly never thought this sort of book would be such a hit with him. We found each time we would go back to a page he would notice something new so personally I feel this has been such a stimulating book for him. Certainly kept us both entertained. The illustrations are the story and they guide you through so many different stories. Well Arthur has come up with a few ideas of what he could get up to after he goes to bed! We read this regularly each week and he enjoys telling stories when read with Dad and then mum. He loved all the different pictures and how he would notice something different each time he went back to the book.  I loved the concept of this picture book, full of imagination and really helped my son become more observant and make his own stories up. The quality of this book is very good.  For what this book delivers and how engaging it is yes great value. I would not have really been drawn to this book, but now we have it I will be looking at others in the series. I would recommend as it offers so much and is fun for the child and mum and dad too. My son really enjoys looking at this book every week and it has offered so much more than we expected.  A great book and really helps your child observe and get creative making up their own stories.  Well worth buying.
