Aquatone Pencils

Aquatone – Paint in a stick. Watercolour pencils are amazingly versatile and Aquatone offers you four times more useable material than a wood cased pencil. This solid stick of pure, watersoluble colour can be used wet or dry, and you can apply broad sweeps of colour in seconds. For even faster colour lay down, simply peel off the protective wrapper and apply Aquatone on its side. Aquatone will give you many hours of creative pleasure. The range of 24 Aquatone colours is the same as those in the Watercolour pencil range so they complement each other perfectly.

The Aquatone pencils are really brilliant. They can be used as a normal pencil, however by adding water they turn into watercolours. You can use the colours singly, or you can put one colour on top of the other and they will mix when the water is added – which is a lot less messy than watercolours! There’s a video clip on the Derwent website demonstrating how to use the  aquatones with a normal paint brush which was really informative. Mia really enjoyed using these as she drew and coloured her picture and then added water with the Waterbrush, which was also as easy to use as a pencil and meant she couldn’t overload it with water and ruin her picture/painting. Issy didn’t fare so well with this being that much younger, but it is definitely great for a slightly older budding artist.  At £33.99 the Aquatones are quite pricey, so I wouldn’t buy them for Issy, however if Mia was really interested in art and showed signs of wanting to take art as one of her options at school then I would be happy to buy them as a present. Was certainly impressed when these arrived, they looked super.  The Aquatone pencils are versatile and can be used as a normal pencil, but by adding water they turn into watercolours.  This offers so much scope as you can mix colours or just use one colour at a time.  Such a fab idea. Also a great way to introduce your children to watercolours without it being so messy! We also clicked online and found the video demonstrating how to use the Aquatone pencils which was really helpful.  Isac & Lucile both had a go at producing their own designs and trying to draw our pet rabbit.  These are very easy to use.  I think these are super idea for young budding artists, but my 2 just like to draw and have fun. I was a little shocked at the price, but the quality is superb so would purchase these as a gift (especially if they love art and drawing).  I must confess I was not aware of the Derwent range and now will be going back online to check out all the other items on offer as the quality means they are durable and last so much longer.  Elizabeth Henn – Isac 10 & Lucile 9

As a grandmother it is always good to have pencils and paper and paints at home for when Grandchildren come round so was really pleased to receive these to review. These pencils are certainly different and they can be uses as a normal colouring pencil or by adding water they can let you create a water colour painting.  Never had anything like this when I was younger!  Perfect for Faye as she could use them to draw normally or if she felt like painting just add the water and Hey Presto she could create her own water colour creation.  We took a look online and found the demonstation video for this item which was very informative and gave us lots of tips and ideas on how best to use.  Faye enjoyed using these and we also had the Waterbrush which was very simple to use.  The price is steep but the quality compensates as so versatile and last such a long while.  Ideal for a gift and I know a few other Grandchildren who will be getting the set for Birthday and Christmas.  Martha Bryant – Faye 10 years
