Art and Joy Book

This wry and wisdom-filled children’s book from the author of How To Spot An Artist helps artists ages five and up discover the joy of artistic expression while silencing self-criticism.
This is the story of two best friends—Art and Joy—and how they overcome the insidious “Art Bully” that criticizes their creative endeavors. Danielle Krysa knows that kids have an inner critic too—the kind that tells them their artworks are stupid, messy, the wrong color, or just plain wrong. Employing the same arch humor that make her books for adults so relatable and helpful, Krysa illustrates this uplifting tale with her brilliantly colored collages and witty typography. As Art and Joy learn how to tap into their imaginations and shrug off the Art Bully, they also discover some clever ways to get their creative juices flowing using color, shape, line, and found objects. Kids of all ages will find enthusiastic support and valuable inspiration in this playful parable.

My initial impression of the book was good. Nice and big, perfect for children. The front cover is lovely. Nice and bright with fun looking characters on the front. My daughter did enjoy reading the book and looking at the pictures. I think my daughter was a bit old for the book and only really interested her the first time she read it. My daughter understood the message in the book but couldn’t relate to it. I can understand the book helping some children to discover other ways to spark their creative side, however it didn’t with my daughter as I feel she was a bit old for the book. My daughter could relate to understanding that art is her passion as she loves all things art and drawing and tries her hardest to perfect her art. I don’t think the book helped her learn new skills but it gave her some new ideas of things to try. The illustrations of the book were lovely and helped bring the book to life. My daughter only really read the book once but has flicked through some of the pages for art ideas. I think my daughter liked the ideas in the book the most. I thought the characters within the book were lovely. Nice quality book with lovely illustrations. The illustrations were great for engaging younger children. I think 5 is a good age for the book to be recommended to but maybe not as old as 8. The book offers value for money with the ideas throughout. I wouldn’t consider buying it because I feel my child was slightly too old for the book. I would recommend it to family and friends of slightly younger children. Overall, it’s a lovely book with a great message in it. Samantha Friend – Francesca 8 Years

Looked colourful and bright when it arrived. The front cover did intrigue my daughter and she wanted to find out more about the book. My daughter really did enjoy reading this book, with help from mum. The story was really lovely and my daughter learnt a lot and also found lots of different ideas to get creative and be bold when drawing and colouring. The story was captivating for my daughter and kept her entertained. We discussed the story and the message and she did understand and relate to the relationship and message this book detailed. This was a great book to give Lizzie lots more ideas on how to be more creative using bold colours, shapes and lots more. She picked up a lot of tips from this book. I think it helped her understand to keep trying and not give up on her passion for drawing and painting. The illustrations were lovely and really bought the characters to life. This has been read a few times and she goes back to it for more ideas. I think this will be a book she will refer to over the years. She loved the characters and the tips. I liked how it engaged Lizzie and the high quality of this book. This is a very well made book, high quality and will last for a long time. The illustrations were so vibrant and really lovely. I think the age suitability is ideal as was perfect for my daughter. For the quality and durability of the book yes good value. I would buy this for my younger son when he gets a bit older and will engage and encourage him to be creative and have fun. I would recommend as it has been a hit with Lizzie. A really lovely book, with a good message and good tips. We both loved it. Charmaine Archer – Lizzie 6 Years

The artwork looked lovely and the book was well presented. The artwork looked good, nice and bright. My child was indifferent and didn’t find the cover appealing. My child is very intelligent and advanced for a 5yr old and has a great understanding of feelings and emotions though he didn’t understand the concept of this book. It did provoke conversation in having to explain a lot of the story because it was left open to interpretation but this style of book for his age wasn’t captivating enough to keep his interest. The book was a difficult read, it didn’t keep his attention and he found it boring. We have had better books with the same intention that have captivated him and sparked emotion and feeling. It was too much “reading between the lines” for a 5yr old to fully understand and captivate to lead onto conversation. After talking and explaining he fully understood but not enough to gauge the concept based solely on the storyline. We love a book that sparks conversation for a learning experience but this was difficult to capture his attention. There was too much going on, suggestions for art and design, colours, feelings and emotions. My son couldn’t grasp the meaning without it being explained because each page contained several hidden messages and tasks. He did understand the message, however this took some getting to after much conversation. I believe it will help him learn skills to help in the future, however I feel there are better and easier ways to get the message across to children. My son struggled with “art and joy” and didn’t fully understand the concept. This was read just once. We read 5 books of his choice daily and it remains in the library untouched. Every time it is suggested he declines and opts for other books. I liked the design and feel of this book. I like the concept but think it needed simplifying for younger minds. The quality of the book is lovely. Really nice cover and feel. The illustrations are very nice. I feel this book is a little old for the mind of a 5yr old to fully comprehend the meaning behind the story. I think the quality is lovely however £12.99 is quite expensive for what it is. I think it is expensive for what it is. There are other books that do the same job better and it is a little hard for young minds to understand the meaning behind the story. Older children will understand however the storyline and illustrations will be a little young for them. I would not recommend for the same reason. I like the concepts and the quality is great but this book just struggles in several ways. Concept too old for a 5year old yet the story is too young for an older child.
