Boo Boo Baby and the Giraffe Book by Eileen Browne

Part of the My First Picture Book series: perfect for every toddler to help encourage language skills, understanding, enjoyment and sharing. These books are a bridge between board books and picture books; printed on toddler-tough card with rounded corners.
Boo Boo Baby has lots of fun bouncing from animal to animal – but here comes a… rhino! ‘Boo hoo!’ says Baby Boo Boo, so the animals comfort her, bouncing her back to bed. This is a wonderfully soothing bedtime story from the author of Handa’s Surprise.

A lovely quality, large book with bright colours and simple yet striking illustrations. It seems to be a hybrid (neither a board book nor a paperback). The covers and pages of the book are made from shiny card. Right from the outset, I could tell that it would stand the test of time (or the test of my toddlers). My 16 month old loved the book. I put it down on the sofa and she brought it straight over to me. It is now a firm favourite. Every time we sit down, there is a request for "Boo Boo”. The illustrations were very simple yet striking. Generally, there were a couple of simple illustrations per page. The pages were not too "busy”. I think this is one of the reasons it appealed to my toddler so much. My daughter loves this book, she requests "Boo Boo” again and again (and again!). I’m not really sure she was particularly bothered about the story. She liked the fact that each animal Boo Boo Baby encountered had a different rhythm for moving (for example: lollopy lopey) for the giraffe. She loved sitting on my knee and being bounced in time to the rhythm. The bright colours and movements were definitely stimulating. We haven’t been able to use it as a bedtime book though! Overall this book is very good. Definitely good value for money. I would probably prefer to borrow the sequel from the library rather than buy a copy. I would certainly recommend. A lovely, good quality book with bright, stimulating drawings and a simple storyline. Perfect for my little toddler. Nichola Tucker – Eleanor 16 Months

Nice, thick book with bright colours. The book itself is lovely and thick, and the rounded pages are a good idea. Saves the wee one from being scratched or poked with corners. Could maybe do with being a little bit smaller, I found I struggled to hold a toddler and the book upright at the same time. My child loves books, so was excited at first glance. He enjoyed turning the pages (which were easy for him as the pages are thick and the corners rounded), but I noticed he wasn’t actually paying too much attention to the pictures. I think the colours could do with being a little bit brighter. My child didn’t seem that interested in them – he normally loves picture books with animals in it. My child enjoyed looking at the book with mummy but was happy to turn the pages over without really "seeing” the pictures. It didn’t seem to catch his attention, unlike other books. My child seemed completely uninterested in the animals, but he did like the main character "Boo Boo” when he was crying! My son would often go direct to that page and try and give the character a kiss to make him stop crying. On the whole, I would say "no”, this is not stimulating enough for my child. It’s a nice enough book but there just wasn’t enough going on for my child. This book is slightly disappointing. It promises so much – the thick pages, the rounded corners, the large print – but it just doesn’t seem interesting enough (for my child anyways). For me I feel this book is not good value for money as was not stimulating enough for my son. I would recommend others to read this book, and pick up from the library. The story itself in this book is very basic. I’d have liked more pictures in the background for myself and my son to discuss (i.e. toys in Boo Boo’s room, or pictures on his bedroom wall). It would have made the story more interesting if there were other things to point out and discuss. The ostrich went completely over my son’s head; he had no idea what it was and, frankly, couldn’t care. He did like the zebra and the giraffe, but they didn’t hold his attention for long. What saved this book, for my child, was the fact the cot mobile had a star. He loves stars/moons and would go direct to that page and point out the star. Another thing worth noting is the language used by the animals. It may be worthwhile the parent reading the book first to try and work out how to pronounce the language used by the animals! "lollopy lopey” took me a minute to get my tongue around! Susan Mullen – Reece 2 Years

Looked a lovely high quality book and colourful. The illustrations were lovely. Lillian really liked this book as the pages were shiny card and she loved the feel of the pages. Also well made so would last. Lillian really loved this book and is one of her favourites now. We just sit on the sofa and I read her the story and she follows all the pictures. The pictures are lovely to look at and the story is well written. Simple and effective and a good book. It was great to have special expressive words for the animal movement such as ‘lollopy lopey’ for the Giraffe. She would try and pronounce the movement sound. A lovely book which is stimulating and the illustrations are adorable. Good value for money as Lillian loved this book. Lovely book, expressive story and loved by my daughter. I would purchase this book and have also recommended. A winner with us. The perfect bedtime story book for Lillian. Katie Mace – Lillian 18 months
