Martin Haake, Judith Homoki By the Sea Life Along the Coast
With illustrations by Martin Haake
Brimming with illustrations and information, this coast-to-coast journey through time and across continents introduces young readers to the historical and cultural importance of the world’s seashores.
Coasts have always been the starting point of discovery— whether by explorers searching for new lands or children sifting through the sand for beautiful shells. This trip around the world’s oceans provides hours of fun and learning in a series of highly detailed double-page spreads that look at every aspect of critical coastal habitats, including the ebb and flow of tides; life in a coastal settlement; artistic depictions of seashores; native animals and plants; the whaling industry; tourism; and climate change. The book also provides a Twenty-First-Century corrective to Western-centric narratives about exploration and colonialism. Interspersed throughout are meticulously detailed maps of the world’s largest oceans with historic events, figures and scientific facts highlighted.

As fun as it is informative, this vibrant book takes readers on a trip around the globe that fosters a feeling of connection between their lives and the world’s coastlines.

Large book, good quality, lovely illustrations. My child loves all things beach and was intrigued by the illustrations especially the sea monsters! My child enjoyed this book because each page was a different topic and he could pick and choose what he wanted to read (it didn’t have to be in order). He also enjoyed the little fact sentences on the page, these kept him engaged and were his favourite part. My child prefers nonfiction text so this was great for him especially as he has a keen interest in beach exploration. We loved that it was just the right amount of information on tourism and climate change, kept to simple facts and was easy to understand, illustrations helped to reinforce the information given. Same to be said for information on Western-centric narratives and exploration and colonialism. We both learnt lots from this book and it’s very easy to pick out facts and information and revisit them when needed. My son enjoyed the maps and reading the information that went with them, illustrations were great also. My child already had a keen interest in coastlines and travel, but this was our favourite book on the topic. My son frequently picked up and explored this book. My son liked the small facts on each page. I really liked the illustrations. Lovely hardback book and very good quality. The illustrations are very good and very engaging. This was ideal for my son. My son doesn’t quite read at age, but the small facts made the book manageable. This is a well written educational book full of lots of interesting facts, but not an information overload! I do think this book offers value for money due to quality and information covered. Tricky one as we love the book, but I wouldn’t normally spend £20 on a book, I would consider buying at around the £13 mark. I would recommend as great book, lots of information and easy to read. We loved it, perfect book for my child, ticked all the boxes when finding an information book for him. This book was enjoyable, informative and entertaining. Claire Gooding-Matthews – Henry 9 Years

The front page where the picture is that looks very interesting but I would book is very big. Front cover was inspiring and it made my kids read what’s inside the book. Because there are lots of pictures inside the book my kids enjoyed reading this book. Some of the facts about coastal habitats, flow tides, animal and plant my children found interesting and they wanted to read more. It was very interesting for them to read and learn about tourism and climate. They even asked lots of questions to me after reading this. It was good for them to read about relation to Western-centric and exploration of colonialism. This book did teach the more about the world and coastlines and now they want to explore more places like this. They found the maps very interesting and enjoyed learning more. This book did actually inspire them to want to visit more places locally and around the world. Inspired interest in travelling. Presently they have read this book once. They loved the pictures in the book. I loved the pictures in the book and it inspired my kids a lot and they learned some good facts from this book. Quality of the book is very good but the only downside is the size of the book. The illustrations are very good. I think the age suitability was ideal for my daughter. My daughter is 9 years old now but my son who is 6 even enjoyed this book due to the pictures. This is a good educational book and very well written for kids. Personally I do think this book is a little expensive. I would buy this book as the information it details and the educational aspect of this book makes it worth buying. I would recommend this book to others as it offers a lot. Overall experience was good with book and it kept my kids busy for few hours. It gave good information and they learned a lot from this book. It was a lot bigger than I expected it to be, but beautifully presented. The front cover was nice and the children could not wait to open the book. They enjoyed learning new things. They enjoyed looking at the different pages on coastal habitats, seashores and native animals. I enjoyed learning about all the different aspects and facts about our coast more then the children. All my children just enjoyed looking at all the different pages. My children did not really enjoy finding out about trip around the globe and world’s coastlines but I did. Some of them enjoyed the detailed maps with scientific facts. We live near a local beach but this book did show us things to look for. This book was only read a few times. My children enjoyed looking at the pictures and naming things. I enjoyed learning new things featured in this book. The quality of this book is very good. The illustrations were very good. I feel this book should be aimed at older age than 8 years. This is a well written book and very educational. I do feel this book is a bit on the pricey side. I would not buy this just due to price. I would recommend for friends and family with older children. It is a good clear book, well-illustrated but definitely aimed at older children. A lovely book, as a parent I enjoyed reading it but it was definitely aimed at the older child with a good attention span. Melissa Shirley – Xavier, Kiya & Phoebe – 5, 6 & 8 Years

I would recommend as great book, lots of information and easy to read. We loved it, perfect book for my child, ticked all the boxes when finding an information book for him. This book was enjoyable, informative and entertaining.
