Fly Flies

Fly Flies By Alice Bowsher and Ziggy Hanaor

Fly just wants to have fun flying, but everyone she meets thinks she’s doing it all WRONG!

Fly is happily practicing her flying in the park, doing some wibbles and some wobbles and some waveys. Blackbird, Seagull, Starling and Hawk take turns giving Fly advice about the best way to fly; fly in a straight line, glide on the wind, fly in a flock, dive onto your food…. Fly tries to take their advice on board, but each time finds that this is not HER way to fly.

With a sweet, witty twist at the end, this is a delightful book about staying true to yourself in the face of people who insist they know better.

This book has beautiful illustrations. I love the black and white style; my children loved the book and had become a favourite of ours. I loved the concept, simple and effective for little people. They loved following the fly. It’s a great story for children to understand. The illustrations are beautifully designed. It’s the perfect length for bedtime stories. I think it is age appropriate; my 2 year old seems to love it too. We have read this one over 10 times; they seem to like this one. They like how the fly makes its own decision. This is an ideal book to have in Pre-Schools and Infant Schools. The quality is excellent. It looks a very nice quality book. I would buy this for my friend’s children and recommend it to others. It’s good, great story behind the book and beautiful illustrations. I think it’s a beautiful book with a great story, helps the little ones to think about what they want to do in life and how to make it happen. It’s certainly become a family favourite go to book in our house. Hayley Russell – Boys 2 & 4 years

I thought the cover was attractive and well designed. I liked that it was mostly black and white and the hardcover felt sturdy. I liked the cover, the mostly monochrome nature of it made it stand out from most children’s books. I liked the font used and how it was made to fit into the illustrations. It definitely made me want to read the story. I really liked the concept of the book. It contains an important message but written in an entertaining story so it communicates the message in a subtle way. Both of my children enjoyed this book. The simple colour choices and bold illustrations appealed to my younger child (21 months) and my 4 year old loved both the story and the illustrations. Rhys loved it! He has asked for it to be one of his bedtime stories at least 4 times a week since we’ve had it. He found it funny when the different ways of flying didn’t work out for the fly and liked that the fly was happy at the end. The illustrations really appealed to him. Each time we read it he had to follow the trails with his finger. He particularly liked the page with all the flies flying all over the place with some bumping into each other! The black and yellow really popped against the white of the page and the illustrations depicted the story really well. It feels like they contained the same amount of humour as the story. The story was the ideal length for this age group and would even suit slightly younger children as well. The book is definitely appropriate for children age 3+. As mentioned before, some children slightly younger may also enjoy it as well. We read this book at least 4 times a week during the testing period (at my son’s request, not because I suggested it!). I think the book is an ideal one for pre-school types of setting and children of a range of ages would enjoy it. There was not just one thing Rhys liked about it. He says he liked all of it! We chatted about it a bit more and he said he liked following all the wiggly lines with his finger. The book is sturdy and the paper used for the pages was lovely and thick. It’s an excellent quality book. It’s quite a lot of money for a picture book but given that it is hard back and the quality of the materials is high, I think the price is fair. A paperback copy at a lower price may sell better. I would buy this book. It is nicely different to a lot of picture books out there and I think the story and the illustrations are of a high quality which appeals to both children and the adults sharing the story! I would recommend this book. I think the message contained in the story is important and told in a very child friendly way. I think the book will entertain a lot of children. All aspects of this book were impressive, leading me to give it full marks. The bold colour choices, the entertaining story, underlying message and the fun illustrations all come together to make a great book. We very much enjoyed reviewing this book and it’s definitely become a favourite in our bedtime story choices! A very positive experience and one that will be read for a good while yet! This was well packaged, nice front cover and good quality cartoon. The front cover is very lively. My child wants to read the book every night before bed. It’s an interesting concept and I am happy to read this to my child. We both enjoyed it. It’s an interesting story and it helps with children’s imagination on what things should be and what the story really is about. My son really likes the story and is starting to memorise it. My child likes to follow through the fly’s journey in the book. The illustrations made the book come alive; even though the colours are quite monochrome, the illustrations were interesting and engaging. The length of the story is great. It’s not too long or too short. It’s good enough for a bed time story. We have read this book every night before bed. My child especially liked the fly and the way it was trying to fly creating different types of waves/circles. It’s a good quality cartoon book and offers good value for money. I am not 100% convinced I would buy it as I believe there are plenty other stories out there that come to mind first but I would definitely give it a go if I were to find it in a library or children’s story time at nursery. I would recommend it to others though. It’s a good quality book, lovely illustrations, entertaining, engaging and good enough to have my child wanting to read it every night.
