First impressions were great, packaging was eye catching and my little boy was extremely excited before it was even out of the packet.  I like that the packaging is clear so you can see the item before it’s opened. Instructions very simple and straight forward to follow. The “soil” was extremely sticking and tough to separate with the flimsy tool provided. My son really enjoyed finding the skeleton pieces and trying to guess what dinosaur we were finding, the gem was also a big hit, it is shame there weren’t a couple more of those to find in there. He really enjoyed finding all the pieces but the assembly was a bit too tricky for his small hands as the pieces were very flimsy.  I found the fact sheet interesting and I am sure to an older child who can read and understand it would be great, however my 4 year old was all about the digging! The skeleton model pieces were quite flimsy and my son struggled to assemble them with his small hands, he really enjoyed making the fossils and has repeatedly gone back to this activity along with burying and digging out the gems. First of all the soil has a very strong chemical smell when you open it which remains on your hands and isn’t pleasant.  It has a similar texture to kinetic sand and I love that it doesn’t leave mess (although some of the stones do fall off) – this has been the aspect that my son enjoyed the most, constantly digging and shaping and reshaping the soil keeps him engaged for long periods of time, he has even brought his construction trucks in to create a building site with the soil. This toy absolutely kept my son entertained and has been used regularly since, minus the dinosaur it came with which was too flimsy and kept getting stuck to the soil and coming apart so we introduced our own dinosaurs instead. The soil was his favourite part and digging for the gem. I think it is probably more suited towards children who are 5 plus and have the strength and dexterity to manipulate the tool in such sticky soil and can more delicately assemble the flimsy parts. I think it’s a lot of money for the amount of soil you get and only 1 gem I would pay around £10-£12 for something like this. The volcano, fossil shapes, gem and soil are fantastic what lets it down is the flimsy skeleton and the little digging tool – the rake end is pointless, you cannot rake that soil. They all contain the same items so I think I wouldn’t buy any more – if they came in different cases (i.e., not volcano) with different gem and dinosaur and maybe a different tool each time then it would be worthwhile otherwise you will have 4 or 5 of the same volcano and same tool just to get a different gem or skeleton. I would recommend this soil to all my friends who use kinetic sand as it is a fresh take on that idea and very good for boys in particular who like dinosaurs and construction toys. Overall I give it a 4 – we did enjoy the initial opening and since then the volcano/soil and gem have been reused on multiple occasions. Overall we really enjoyed this product, I think the price is quite high for what is actually included. Anna Louise Farrall – Oliver 4 Years

Looks pretty cool! Instructions easy to follow.  It was easy to make but the dinosaur kept losing a leg. My son thought the surprises hidden inside the dino dirt was the most exciting bit. Louie loves digging, loves dirt and loves to learn, he also absolutely loves skeletons so he loved being able to learn about the bones too. He loved building the skeleton, it did keep losing a leg though which he found annoying. The moulds were pretty cool. He loves that I don’t tell him he needs to put the dino dirt  away to avoid drying it out, he loves to play with it for a long time.  This did keep him entertained. Louie loves learning so was keen to find out more from books and Google. It kept him happy for a good hour at least. My son loved the dinosaur skeleton. I loved that the dirt was like actual dirt and the dinosaur was a skeleton rather than just a normal toy one. I do agree the age suitability was ideal for my son. I think £16 is a bit steep for this product, I think £10-12 is a bit more reasonable. It is good quality, well-made aside from the leg that keeps falling out. I would buy this.  However, I would most likely only buy it on offer. It’s a good product, well made and educational, brilliant for Dino lovers. I would recommend as it is a perfect stocking filler for dinosaur fans. It’s a very good toy, however I would like to see the dinosaur parts more stable so the legs don’t fall out. A very good product overall though. The dirt is cool, although a little hard. Finding not just a dinosaur but a jewel too was a huge bonus! It’s educational, fun to play with, satisfies sensory cravings for a short while too. It’s well made overall though and will definitely be a big hit with dinosaur fans. Very heavy but cool packaging. Instructions were unclear on what you were supposed to do.  My son did find this easy to make. They enjoyed digging but would have been better if the pieces were hidden individually rather than 1 plastic bag at the back. They both enjoyed excavating the skeleton and finding out more facts about dinosaurs. They needed help to build the dinosaur but had great fun making the fossils. They both enjoyed playing with the dino dirt although it was a little sticky. Once the dinosaur was built and few fossils made there’s wasn’t much to continue to command their attention.  They liked the crystal the most.  I liked making the fossils.  Age suitability is ideal but my 3 year old also enjoyed this toy. I personally think it is a little overpriced considering the length of time they played with it. Good quality but a dino dirt little sticky. I would buy this if I saw it on offer. I would recommend only if it was a little cheaper. Kids enjoyed it but not full marks due to the weight of it which I am not sure is necessary, the sticky texture and the lack of instructions. Overall the kids enjoyed it but if I paid 16 pounds for it I would be a little disappointed. Joanne Maguire – Rory & Aoife – 6 & 3 Years
