Inner Child

Inner Child By Henry Blackshaw

A heartwarming book about the inner child that makes adults act the way they do.

Dear Kids, Did you know that all adults have a child inside them? They try to hide them by pretending to be busy and stressed all the time, but as you know, it’s impossible to keep children hidden. Sometimes they just have to come out and PLAY!

This is a delightful little book that will appeal to adults and children equally, explaining why adults behave in the strange ways that they do, and how important it is to preserve the place of playfulness and joy inside all of us.

I was very excited upon receiving the book as it looked impressive and very unique from other children’s books. My daughter had her mind running crazy and she fought hard to decipher the concept behind the book as soon as it was given it to her. My daughter really enjoyed the book and we thought it was very different and unique from other learning books. She read it over and over again a couple of times. She was really entertaining and curious about the concept shown in the book especially the pictures were very appealing to my little one. She thought it was “find the differences” book when she saw the pictures! She thought the illustrations were very entertaining and she actually figured out lots of situations the adults could be in. She even matched the pictures to the Gruffalo. The illustrations sparked a new excitement in my little one and she made lots of pretend plays with the pictures. She kept thinking of what situations the figures could be in and I found it really imaginative and creative. The length of the story was absolutely perfect! Not long enough to be boring and not too short either. It was the perfect length for over 5’s. I would say it is aimed at over 6’s. My daughter loved reading but I think she didn’t quite grasp the concept behind it. Maybe it is aimed for kids over 6 as I found she is still young to understand the concept behind it. Initially, we read it twice a day. And now read it twice or thrice a week. She loved the different pictures and the many different stories she could make out of them. She found it different from her usual books. I enjoyed it more than my child and it actually made me understand my inner child. I loved getting the answers as to why we adults act childish or kid-like; we actually have an inner child! I won’t say this is ideal for pre-schoolers but to get its maximum understanding, I would say it is aimed for junior schools kids or kids just about to start junior school. Superb quality! High quality pictures as well as pages. This book is a great read for little ones and it makes them understand adults better. I would buy this book again. I would love to gift it to kids at junior school who have that confusing relation with their parents. I would definitely recommend this book to friends and family as it is a very interesting read. A lovely concept! This is more to just reading, it has a greater meaning behind it. I loved reading the book with my daughter. I was even more surprised at her imagination and what she gained from the book was altogether a surprise. It actually made her put her thinking caps on! I also enjoyed reading it myself as it made me and my daughter together understand life better at our own stages; absolutely amazing and remarkable. Farwah Farrukh – Shanzay 5 years

We were really excited to read it and very intrigued by this book. We talked about what to expect from the book, my daughter thought it looked exciting. From my perspective it reminded me of books that I had read as a child which made it very appealing. She enjoyed reading it. It provided lots of opportunities for questions. She enjoyed looking at the pictures and talking about what was happening. My daughter really liked the pictures of the ‘inner child’ and looking at how each of them was illustrated. It really encouraged my daughter to talk about the story and ask questions. The length of the story was perfect to keep my daughter focused, she maintained concentration throughout. It is age appropriate. I did read it to my younger daughter but she didn’t follow it very well and it was clear that it was more appropriate for my older child. We read it once per week during the trial period. My daughter’s favourite bits were the illustrations of the ‘inner child’ and describing what they looked like. I also enjoyed this book. It made me consider what I do as an adult and what I would really like to be doing! It makes you realise it’s so important to listen to your inner child – particularly when you have your own children! This is a great quality, nicely designed book that is well priced. I would buy this book. I love how it is thought provoking and important for both children and adults to reflect on. I would recommend it to others as a great book for all to read.We really enjoyed reading this book. It was beautifully illustrated and encouraged my daughter to ask lots of questions. The book was very thought provoking and encouraged both myself and my daughter to reflect on what we do. Lucy Little – Heidi 6 Years

Nice quality book, a handy size for small hands to hold. The front cover is bright and explains what the book is about. Once I had read that it is a book about what it’s like to be an adult out loud the kids were more engaged. We really enjoyed reading this book especially my 6 year old, she thought bits were funny. They liked the story. It did make them think about the fact that mummy and daddy were their age once (a long time ago!)  I don’t think the story flowed all that well but the resounding message of the book wasn’t lost on them. They liked the illustrations, especially the ones with the older people on the scooters.  They could identify with it as they have older grandparents. I did have to explain that the pencil drawings in white were depicting the “inner child”. It is a good length, although, I think it could have been slightly longer. My three year old liked the pictures the most.  My 6 year old was probably the one that enjoyed the book the most. We read it about 5 times in total. I think pre-school is slightly too young – 5 and upwards for definite, just so they understand and it really “get it”. I think they liked the fact that it exposed adults for being like big kids.  They liked the comparisons such as your sister and brother still annoying you into adulthood. I liked it too. It’s so true; I don’t think you ever really leave the playground!! The book serves to prove it! It did make me smile. It is a lovely book, well made and a good size. It’s not too expensive and given its quality it’s not going to fall apart or get ripped easily. I would buy this book. I think the price is right, I don’t think I would read it to the kids every week as there isn’t much of a story to it as such but the kids were entertained and it has been put on our bookshelves for story times. I would recommend it to others. It’s fun, not expensive and does entertain the adults due to its content.   I enjoyed reading the book to the kids, made all of us smile. It’s not a “every nighter” but it adds a bit of variety to our book collection. It’s a fun book that appeals to both adults and children, fun to read with colourful and lively illustrations.   Kirsty Fulton – Freddie, Cleo & Hugh – 3, 6 & 10 years
