Man in the Mountain Book

The man in the mountain lay dozing for years
And all kinds of music would play in his ears…

The man in the mountain loves the view from his home of the ocean and forest, but he yearns to see more of the world. Yet whenever he tries to move, he terrifies the woodland creatures around him. Only a small, well-travelled cuckoo is brave enough to come to his rescue… Inspired by themes of freedom and friendship, Man in the Mountain is a charming rhyming story that evokes the beauty of the natural world. Illustrator Gaia D’Alconzo brings Natalie Ramm’s verse to life with playful and heartwarming illustrations.

The cover illustration is attractive and the feel of it is nice. I worried a bit that as the colours weren’t very bright that it might not appeal to my children (although we try to teach them not to judge a book by its cover, often to start with it’s what they go by!). Neither really commented much on the front cover but they both love being read to so always get excited by a new book! I thought it was great and different to a lot of books out there. It is a more grown up concept but written in a way that appeals to young children still. Both of my children enjoyed the story and chose it regularly as a bedtime story. My older child enjoys picking out rhyming words so this appealed to him. My 3 year old didn’t comment on it. Both my children enjoyed talking about the story both during and after reading it and both sat and listened closely to the whole story. I loved the style of the illustrations and even though the colours weren’t bright as in lots of children’s books, both children enjoyed pointing things out in the illustrations and linking them into the story. I think the illustrations are really well done. Using a slightly more grown up style than in most children’s books could be risky but they got the balance right and the illustrations are lovely. It has been chosen maybe 2 or 3 times a week on average as one of our bedtime stories. Both children liked seeing all of the different places in the illustrations and my daughter liked the bird! I enjoyed the flow of the writing. It was enjoyable to read and rhyming books are always easier to read I find! It was great, well made with a good quality cover, good thickness to the pages and a nice size. Ideal. I agree the age suitability is spot on. My youngest is 3 and enjoyed the book. Because it’s a slightly more grown up concept, it’s also a book which will appeal to older children and could be used in primary schools as part of their literacy lessons too for children to discuss the meaning and delve into it a bit more. I feel like the price is a bit high even though the quality is good. For a picture book like this, I would expect it to be priced more around the £5.99 mark. I would buy this as I felt like it was a more unusual children’s picture book and a nice change from a lot of what we read. I would recommend for similar reasons. Some good talking points for children and a story they can learn from too. I felt the book was well-judged, well-written and beautifully illustrated. We all enjoyed this book, it is versatile and will appeal to children of a range of ages. It’s pleasant to read out loud and the illustrations are lovely. Gemma Roberts – Rhys & Jessica – 5 & 3 years

I love the design of the book and reading the back made me want to read it to my children. My son loves books and wanted to read it when it arrived, he’s 4 so I don’t think the front cover would have caught his eye like other books but I think for slightly older children it is perfect. I absolutely love this book, it’s one that you can enjoy as an adult as well as a child! One I actually enjoy reading to my children and not get tired of like some others as it has a lovely message with it.  My son really liked the story and the rhyming element to it, I think as he gets older he will enjoy the story more. He  loved the rhyming element, I think it holds his attention more and gives the book a nice flow to it. This did keep him entertained and he was asking questions about the animals, I think as above he will enjoy the story more and more as he gets older. I love the style of the illustrations and my son was asking questions about the animals so he definitely thought they brought the story to life, they are colourful but really tasteful and brilliant pictures. I really love the style of these illustrations. We would read this book every other day. My son loved the rhyming element of the book. The story, I like that it’s enjoyable to read as an adult too, as you can get fed up of some children’s stories that you have to ready over and over again but I didn’t feel this way about the man in the mountain. I love everything about it, the story and illustrations. I think that although my son did like this book at the age of 4 that he would enjoy it more as he gets older and takes in more of the story!  I think it is still suitable from age 3 plus as they love the rhyming element and pictures and they would continue to love this book for years to come! I find that you can buy books on offer a lot these days. I would buy this book as a gift for my friends with children. I would recommend as I think they would love it. I would give this book a 5 as I think it will be relevant and a story we read for years to come. We’re really happy with this book, it’s a beautiful story and will be a book we will all ready together for years to come! Thank you for allowing us to review it for you.  Jade Nuttall – Son 4 years

Nice bright cover  and looked like very good quality book. My son did like the front cover and he mentioned the butterflies and the colours. The concept of the book was OK, was very different to most children books, as most are based on an animal or human and this was a mountain. He liked the story to start but would loose interest half way through. He loved the rhyming aspect of this story and he laughed a lot at me in the first few pages. I am afraid this story did not capture his attention as he lost interest after a few pages, not sure if it had too many pages and words for his age group. I would not say the illustrations enhanced the story and I wasn’t a fan of the canvas kind of illustration beau loved the cover but didn’t say much about the rest of the pictures and switched off after a few pages. The illustrations were OK. Unfortunately we only read this book once as he was not interested.  He did like the look of the front cove and the rhyming. I really loved the rhyming aspect of this story. I must say the actual book quality was brilliant. I know this book is aimed 3 years plus but not entirely sure about this as definitely did not appear to my 3 year old. I do agree this is not a bad price. I would not buy this as my son did not engage in this book. I would not recommend as the book did not capture my son’s interest. Great quality loved the rhyming not a fan of the illustration or the story line. Great quality book, loved the rhyming, did not like the illustrations and maybe too wordy for a 3 year old.  Not engaging for a 3 year old don’t think they are at that level to understand a mountain and then a mountain to have feelings.
