Orchard Toys Home Learning Made Fun – Age 3+ and 5+ Books Reviews

Looked good quality and we received the 5+ book. The front cover was inviting and looks like included lots of excitement. The activity sheets were clear, and short so readable for the 6 year old. They were easy enough activities with some challenge to help develop their skills. The literacy topics were educational and they linked to current learning from school, and was a stretch without pushing them so hard they stopped being fun! The writing a story section was tricky but enjoyable.  They were really engaged in this section. The rhyming pairs and spelling practice were manageable and fun. The math sheets delivered a good range of challenges. This book delivered lots of literacy skills to read and explore. This did help improve spelling skills and also built confidence. This did help them use imagination to write their own story.  It was tricky but it was great to see them be proud of their story. Saw a huge improvement in math skills. This book has been ideal for home schooling. This book was educational and entertaining the only thing they would have preferred was some stickers. It is so good they donate to the NHS as they have been amazing.  However it would not have stopped me buying it if they did not donate. We used this book every few days for several weeks. They liked the fact the book was fun. I liked the fact it was not too overwhelming and each page was clearly presented. The quality is good the only thing that I wished was that the answers in the back were perforated so could be torn out. This book is very good value. I’d buy this, it was something they enjoyed. I would definitely recommend this book. Great book, made learning fun! Fantastic book, easy lay out. A great range of activities. Cheryl Glinwell – Childminder Bella 6 Years

When this book arrived looked good quality and we received the age 3+ book. The front cover was encouraging and make Charlie interested. The tasks included in this book were suitable to my son’s age. The literacy topics did help reinforce school work and other homework we do with our son. The wei5ing a story was not a highlight for our son, he preferred the other activities. The rhyming pairs was great because it was something he was working on at school. The maths worksheet was good and he could complete with our help. This book did help him improve his literacy skills as it reinforced and helped make it “much less boring” for him (his words not mine). Also helped with spelling skills too. Our son has a good imagination but did not write his own story. This book was beneficial in helping his practice his math’s skills. Was a great book to help with home schooling. This book is definitely entertaining and educational. Good to know they donate £2.00 to the NHS charity for every book sold but it would not be the main reason for us purchasing a book like this. We used this book about 5 times. Our son really liked the different type of images and illustrations. We liked the quality of the book and pleasing images. The quality is exceptional. Definitely good value.  I would buy this book as great value for money.  Would recommend for the same reason. Great overall experience, the only improvement would be to include stickers. We received the book for 3+. The book looks colourful from the outside and my son liked the rainbow, as he remembers drawing them a lot over the last year. I think using the phrase Home Learning for the title is great, although then using home schooling at the bottom I didn’t think suited the book, especially as at that age they don’t attend school, and parents aren’t “schooling’ per say but trying to support learning. On flicking through the book on first arrival, I was surprised that there was no colour at all throughout the pages. My son loved the rainbow on the front cover – he has additional needs and sees doctors and nurses regularly so was aware this was linked to the NHS, which was nice. It might be nice to have one of the pages more related to the NHS on the front cover. He was very keen to open the book and start the activities, he thought it was a bit like a ‘comic’. However, after a few pages he did lose interest, and I think this was as there was no colour across the pages to entice him in. For example, a colour chart to show what colours he might use to colour in the animals, or one of the items coloured in already. I think he followed the activity sheets well, especially as he’s only recently 3. He particularly enjoyed tracing letters, and now does this for his name, matching up and the maze. He found the shadow one the hardest to follow. Iin terms of literacy, he really enjoyed tracing letters in this book and its really nice to now have him trace his name. We used it more for learning through play. I think what’s really good in the book is the questions asked, for example, can you name the dinosaurs (page 14). I think a huge improvement that could be made is providing space for the answers to the additional questions – we used the book as topics for discussion (like the baking page) and it was nice to note down what Isaac liked / didn’t like doing (he didn’t like the noise of the blender but did like tasting the spoon) – but there is nowhere to write this down. I think if questions are being asked throughout the book, space should be provided to write answers so the little one feels their answers are valued and also so that they can be re-visited. As mentioned, I think a big improvement would be the sporadic introduction of colour. With such a bare colour scheme, I think Isaac lost interest quicker than when we do the literacy/numeracy/puzzle solving activities in his comics. Also, having multiple activities on one page I think had him lose interest – he loved matching the butterflies to the flowers and numbers (page 7), but when I said we can then colour it he didn’t want to, as I think in his head he had completed the task. I think spot the difference without colour is also quite hard. Absolutely important to us they donate £2 for each book sold to the NHS. Isaac attends regular appointments for a medical condition, and we would be lost without the care, guidance and support of the NHS. He is as healthy as he is because of the effort, time and care his nurses, doctors, physios, dieticians and wider team invest and thank you is not enough. He is at nursery 4 days a week, and the days he is home we try and do a ‘crafts/colouring’ session once a day – across those three days we would have used this on at least one, so 4-5 times across the month. He managed to “do” 14 pages. I liked the fact donate to the NHS, range of activities (colouring, cooking at home, mazes and spot the difference. I liked the additional questions to spark conversation with LO and their imagination and tracing of words to introduce writing. Quality is fantastic, as with all Orchard Toys products. Absolutely superb value especially as a large chunk is being donated. Essentially £1 for a range of activities, all nicely printed and bound is great! I would buy to support the NHS, but without that element, my answer would be No. I don’t think it engaged my little one very well without colour and multiple tasks on one page. Introducing stickers might be another way of engaging the younger user. I would not recommend for a 3 year old, it didn’t hold his attention for very long. I think he did enjoy doing the activities, he just got bored very quickly. I think the book is an amazing idea – having had our little one at home for months due to medical shielding, anything that can engage him and stimulate his learning is incredible. I think there are a few things I would personally change to engage our little one further: Introduction of colour throughout the book – the idea is that this is more than just a colouring book, and I think having a monochrome approach lays the foundation it is just for colouring, so it is then more effort to engage the little one. I also think some tasks are difficult to do without colour, e.g., spot the difference – a big thing for a 3 year old with this puzzle is differences in colour. Limiting the “tasks” (i.e., matching, colouring, finding) to one per page. Providing space for answers to the additional questions. Gemma Monaghan – Isaac 3 Years 2 Months
