Out of Nowhere

A feel-good picture book about friendship and change, from the bestselling author of The Suitcase, translated into over 20 languages.

Beetle and Caterpillar are best friends. Every day, they sit together on a big rock, sharing a picnic and looking out over the forest. But one day, Caterpillar goes missing and, try as he might, Beetle cannot find her. Just as he is about to give up hope, a very friendly (and rather familiar) butterfly appears out of nowhere. Can it be his friend? She might look different but she is still just the same and they are together again, at last.

A heartwarming story from bestselling author, Chris Naylor-Ballesteros, shortlisted for Oscar’s Prize 2020 and The Kate Greenaway Award 2020.

This is a lovely book, very clean and clear illustrations. My son loved the cover and immediately wanted to look inside. I think he was a little too young to fully understand the full story and it’s message but he loved the little bugs and trying to find them. As mentioned above he was a little too young to fully understand the main story line of the book but he loved that he was looking for his friend and was trying to find him along the way. My son really enjoyed this book as the pictures were very clear and not too busy he didn’t get distracted too easily. We have ready this book a few times since receiving it which is a big hit as he doesn’t always like to sit for long to read. I thought the illustrations were brilliant, the black and white really helped keep the focus on the characters and the story, it’s really simple but effective. My son  loved looking through at the pictures of the bugs, he really loves bugs at the moment so it really was a great theme for this story. I think the illustrations were the best part of this book, they really are lovely. I think the story line was maybe a little too mature for my little boy only being 2 as he didn’t always follow it but he understood the basic theme of the book and still enjoyed it. This is definitely good value. Fantastic quality, really clean and visually pleasing. I would buy this book, my little boy does struggle to follow books when they are so busy and sometimes over stimulating, this was just perfect. I would definitely recommend, especially to those that struggle like myself to have their children engage in reading. Fantastic I cannot think of any negatives for this book, it will last for many years. I don’t think I have much else to add, whilst the story line was a bit advanced the illustrations were fantastic and kept my little one really engaged in the book. I think this book will be within our collection for many years to come! Charlotte Stoner – Jaxon 2 Years

It looked like a really high quality book, the front cover is really appealing with the sparkly bits. I was intrigued to read it. She absolutely loved the sparkly bits on the front cover. She wanted to know what the creature holding hands with the butterfly was. She was very interested to her the story.  She enjoyed the story and was engaged throughout it. She felt sad when the main character was alone and really happy when they were reunited. I think she is a bit young to relate to the characters in that regard but we did have a discussion afterwards about who our special friends are. My daughter was very entertained and engaged throughout the reading of the story. We read it twice when it first arrived and have read it a handful of times since. The illustrations are beautiful and my daughter noticed that the only coloured pictures were those of the friend. This really helped to bring to life the special nature of their friendship. Both of my children loved the sparkly bits on the front cover. My eldest child loved the audio book aspect. She enjoyed turning the pages as she heard the beep. I like the size of the book as it’s a big bigger than lots of our picture books. I also liked how easy it was to access the audiobook. I do agree suitable for 2- 5 years although I’d say it would appeal to slightly older children too as it can open up so many valuable discussions about friendship and the differences between people as well as the process of metamorphosis. I think it is very good value for money and it feels quite competitively priced to me. It is a very high quality book.  I would buy this as it is a lovely story book at a good price. I would recommend as it would appeal to both boys and girls of a variety of ages. A lovely picture book that opens up lovely discussions with your child. We have really enjoyed sharing this story together and it will be one we return to again and again. It is aesthetically very beautiful and the story is very touching. I love the discussions that arose whilst reading it with both of my children. Joyce Fagan – Neala 2 Years 6 Months

It was bigger than I thought. Had a lovely picture of a bug and butterfly with the moon in the background. I thought it looked really interesting and would appeal to my little boy. I thought the bug and butterfly looked really sweet. The moon with the silvery edge also looked good. I feel that these things appeal to most young children regardless of gender. My son enjoyed the story. He’s starting to understand emotions & feelings so was concerned for the bug when his friend disappeared but that added to his involvement in the story. It was nice that it had a happy ending. He’s starting to understand emotions & feelings so was concerned for the bug when his friend disappeared but that added to his involvement in the story. It was nice that it had a happy ending. It had some similarities with the hungry caterpillar book (the change to a butterfly) so he could relate to that too. Overall he enjoyed the story. Lost a bit of interest on the pages with no words but that’s just him. I tried to get him to listen to the audio book but the pace was too slow and he lost interest. I thought this was a shame as it is a good idea. We read this approx. 3 times on the first day and around twice per week since. I think the pictures are beautiful. My son loved it when the bug realised his caterpillar friend had changed in to a butterfly. I loved looking at the lovely pictures. I agree the level and nature of the story is perfect for this age group. They are starting to understand nature and emotions more and can go beyond basic picture books. The price seems about right for the quality of the book. I thought it was good quality. The paper is thicker than some of our other books so less likely to be ripped. I would buy this as it is a lovely story and my son loves books so we have lots of them. It’s a lovely story and well-illustrated. It’s suitable for all small children so I would recommend. This was a lovely book to share with my son. He thoroughly enjoyed the story and I’m sure it will stay in his book collection for years. Julie Griffiths – Mason 2 Years 6 Months
