Plum Baby Stage 1 Pouches

The Plum Baby Stage 1 pouches – Parsnip Pea & Pear – Very green, and may remind you of school dinners at first sight, but our Spinach recipe is ultra soft, mild and simply very good indeed (according to our baby tasters!). It is a great way to introduce vital nutrients to your baby. The spinach is present yet not overpowering; apple gives it the sweet balance and sweet potato gives it a more ’rounded’ flavour GLUTEN & DAIRY FREESUITABLE FOR VEGETARIANS

Initial impression was of a nice, healthy looking product. I wouldn’t normally go for pouches as jars are usually cheaper (and I do homemade food the majority of the time) but I was very happy to be testing them to see for myself about their advantages. To me, the Mango flavour tasted fine and the spinach one was just about ok too. The Parsnip, Pea and Pear one tasted (and looked) pretty odd to me. But what I think didn’t really matter as Sam loved them all! Babies obviously have different tastes and baby food manufacturers have obviously learnt this! I’d still rather do home-made purees/food and I would guess them to be a bit better nutritionally than packed food. But from what I read on the ingredients etc. it seems fine. For a pouched baby food the packaging was absolutely fine – the cap was easy to remove and replace and the colours etc. were nice (I like the large images of the foods in the pouch so you can easily see which one you’re grabbing from the cupboard). Pouches are good as no worries about them breaking in your bag and your baby can have a mouthful or two direct from the packaging without you having to worry about the rest being contaminated (useful for stage 1 if you have a baby that can decide to not eat anything at all on a whim!). However they do have a few downsides – one is that you have no ‘edge’ to wipe the spoon against if your feeding your baby straight from pouch leading to a few helpless moments of dripping food from the spoon. The biggest downside for me though is the fact that it’s not obviously recyclable. If it is possible to recycle them how to do this should be printed clearly on the packaging. They are pretty convenient, particularly for days out. It’s easy to just chuck one in your bag and be on your way – the only other thing you need is a spoon. The pouch size seemed about right for this stage. There were many times Sam didn’t eat a whole pouch – the amount he would leave would be different every time. It was pretty easy to save what remained and use it either as the next meal or as part of the meal. Often I would part use the Mango and Banana flavour on purpose – I’d use it as his ‘pudding’ or back up if he wasn’t particularly keen on the puree/food I was trying to give him. I always knew he would eat a few mouthfuls of this if all else failed! The selection is pretty good. As I mentioned before – the savoury flavour combinations are a little odd (I can’t imagine tucking into spinach and apple or parsnip and pear myself) but they seem to work for babies. The quality is pretty good too. The price is good compared to other pouched baby foods. I would consider buying these if Sam was still young enough. He’s past stage 1 now. If I have another baby I would consider buying them – particularly the sweet versions for occasional use. However I wouldn’t buy in any volume as I’d feel too guilty about not being able to recycle the packaging and would therefore buy more jars than pouches. I would recommend them as Sam seemed to like them so much. Sam definitely enjoyed this food and would eat them even when he turned his nose up at my lovingly prepared homemade purees! I liked the convenience of the small, light, unbreakable packaging – which also allowed Sam to have just a couple of mouthfuls if he felt like it without ruining the rest.  Jenni Maxwell – Sam 9 Months

This product looked like an eye catching pouch of food. They looked handy to just put in your bag with a spoon when out and about. My little boy tried three different varieties of these pouches of plum foods and they have all gone down very well. I had a taste of them and they taste just as if I’d made them myself. The nutritional benefits of these pouches are very good as they are fresh food with no additives mixed up in a puree. The packaging is very attractive and straight away you can see that they are useful for mummy’s and daddy’s that are on the go with their babies and just need to pop something that can easily be used with a spoon without making much mess. Again the convenience of the packaging is very good as you can just twist the lid off, squeeze as much as you want onto your baby’s spoon and then let them eat the baby food. If the food isn’t finished you can easily put the lid back on and re-use later when needed. You can also warm these pouches of food up by putting them in a bowl with a little warm water around the pouch to slowly heat them up to a temperature that wouldn’t burn my baby’s mouth. The pouch sizes were more than enough to start with so I would just put the lid back on and store in fridge till later that day or the following day. As my baby got a bigger appetite he would just eat the whole pouch at one single meal time so overall these are a good size pouch of food. The selection of recipes in the range was very good there was a wide range of different flavours, from just sweet pouches to sweet and savoury flavours mixed together. The quality of the product was very good, for example if I got the pea and pear pouch and then got some pea’s and a pear and blended them up, I don’t think you would be able to tell which one came from the pouch and which one was freshly blended as these pouches are just like freshly made food. I don’t think the taste could be improved anymore as they taste just like fresh food. I already have bought some more of these pouches since testing them out. I would recommend these to someone else. If the price was a bit less or maybe a multipack of say six pouches were available to buy at a cheaper price then this product would have my full marks. This product was a very good eye-catching product, easy for use on our travels when out and about and tastes like fresh food. Zoe Broughton – Jenson 9 Months
