Spike the Fine Motor Hedgehog® Sensory Tree House Reviews

It looked very professional and of good quality. I think the concept is sound and borne out by research on child development. It’s a great way to develop fine motor skills and to develop understanding of shape, size and texture. The instructions were clear and concise and included safety warnings. My son quickly figured out how to use the toy with minimal support. He then used the wee Hedgehogs for all sorts of imaginative play. My son found this easy to hold and the larger ones also. My son enjoyed the texture and enjoyed telling me all the different things he could observe e.g. this one’s spikey, this one’s blue etc. Absolutely inspired him to create role play. My son made up all sorts of stories about the hedgehog family. The mummy hedgehog feeding the baby hedgehog, he was changing the baby hedgehog’s nappy, Spider-Man was saving the baby hedgehog from the monster hedgehog, he’s had loads of fun incorporating them into his play. This toy helped him develop grip and shape sorting skills. We played we discussed all the colours and shapes and counted the hedgehogs. This has been played with at least every other day. He plays with the hedgehogs more than the box. He would play this in his play corner with his other toys. This toy did entertain my son because it allowed him to create imaginary play experiences. The age suitability is good. It supports the early fine motor skills stages as well as early language recognition e.g. colours, shapes but my daughter who’s 5 also got involved in using them for all sorts of other fun activities. The hedgehogs even had a water slide! My son thought the hedgehogs were cute. I liked the versatility and robustness. They are cute and the offer a great many possibilities for developing key skills and abilities in young children. Somewhat reasonable price  – I think £19 is a little overpriced. Similar style toys are usually roughly £10-15 which is what I’d be happy to pay. Robust, haven’t broken despite lots of rough play, they’ve been everywhere and withstood it all. I would buy this as it’s very cute, has many uses and we’ve definitely got plenty of fun out of it in many different contexts. I would recommend due to the versatility of this toy and the robustness. It has been played with by both my kids often it’s a top toy! Really great product which both my kids have had great fun with! Thank you for allowing me to trial it!! Lyndsey Lauder – Son 3 Years

Came in a well presented box. I think it’s a great idea for babies and young children as Sensory play is really important for them. Instructions were simple and clear. My child found this very simple to use. She did find this easy to hold but I would expect her to anyway due to her age. My daughter enjoyed exploring the hedgehog friends and then telling me how they felt. I would not say this inspired my daughter to create role play stories. My daughter already had good sensory and fine motor skills. My daughter enjoyed talking to me about the different colours, textures and numbers. This would be played with about 2 – 3 times each week. This was kept in the toy room for my daughter to play with. This did keep her entertained. I would say the age suitability is ideal as you can do so many things with it for the different age range. I like how many different questions you can ask to engage play and speech. Personally I feel this is a little overpriced. The quality of the toy is great and easy to clean. I would buy this as good toy.  I would recommend this to friends and also to my daughters nursery. The overall experience was great she has had lots of fun learning and playing.  It’s easy to use and clean. Nice bright colours and there are so many things you can do with it. Nicely packaged, lovely compact little hedgehog house. It’s a nice little set, very cute and like each hedgehog having its own texture, colour and number. Don’t recall there being any instructions, we just unboxed and let Xander play with it straight away – no instruction needed. My son found this simple and intuitive to play with. Zero issues holding any element of the toy. Straight away he loved the “cute hedgehogs” and noted their different colours and numbers. Texture was really noted, but then he is 3 in June so has been hands on and good with his fine motor skills for some time now. This toy did not inspire  role play as such, but he would play with each hedgehog individually and have them interact with his other toys. This did not improve sensory or fine motor skills, but purely due to his age as mentioned above, as his motor skills are already there.  Xander is already well versed on shapes, colours, numbers, letters, etc. so none of the elements of the toy were new to him. He plays with it every day alongside his other toy animals and his toy cars. It’s kept in the living room amongst his other toys. When he’s in the mood to play with animal-based toys, yes keeps him entertained (he’s a mad car fanatic, so they get the most play here). Though he’s already passed the point of it helping develop his recognition or motor skills, with his ability to begin to role play with animal toys I’d say this is an appropriate age range for the toy. My son liked that they were hedgehogs, as he likes the animal. I liked all the different elements and the compact/portable nature of it. It seems a little steep for what it is – maybe a little lower, around the £15 price point might be better. Can’t fault the quality at all, it’s beautifully made. Would not buy this purely because I feel the price is too high for what it offers, and because Xander is a little too old to have got the full learning experience out of it. I would recommend as it is a lovely toy and appropriate for how it’s intended, so for that reason I’d recommend it to others with younger children. Marked down to 4 purely because of the price and because we couldn’t see its full capabilities as a toy due to Xander’s age when trying it out. The product itself can’t be faulted on how it’s made, the quality, and the packaging. The concept and compact & portable nature of it are great, and the hedgehogs in their little treehouse is very sweet and has a clear purpose.  Hayley Topley – Alexander 2 Years
