A fun new book to read looks engaging and interesting. Well presented,
looks similar to other big name books we own and user friendly for children. Summer
loved the book and insisted on it becoming a regular bedtime story for us all
to read. The illustrations were in line with the story and kept my daughter
engaged with the story throughout reading it. We read together before bedtime
and she has really enjoyed the story insisting on it being read regularly on a
night-time. The story is really nice, engaging and is fluid to read. My
daughter loves this and regularly asks for it to be read again. She is very
keen on pirates which makes it more interesting and asks to wear her eye patch
while we’re reading it. I really enjoyed the story, I found it fun and
something different to the normal books we read. I think it is quite reasonably
priced; I would pay £6.99 for it off the shelves. I would happily buy it
although may not have looked at it as we are too stuck in our ways with stories
we select. I thought this was a lovely
story and would tell others with similar aged children about this. Really family friendly engaging read which we
will carry on reading again and again. Emma

This book was met with an excited face when I showed my son. The front
image is very appealing with clear graphics and eye catching writing. The size of the book was perfect for little
hands. The picture quality was clear and eye catching. The overall feel of the book showed good
quality. Just mentioning the word ‘pirate’ made my son want to open the book
and find out what Sammy was up to. Whilst he can’t read, he loved these images.
We loved the images and use of colours. We thought the page layout changing on
the ‘nuts falling from the tree’ page very clever and gave a bit of variety to
the story. The only criticism I would say it the ‘floating down the
river/crocodile’ pages are quite dark in colour graphics. My son enjoys this
book and now it is a regular read at bed time.
My son even commented the other night that he thought his cousin would
like this book too! Loved the story and the ending! The rhyming story kept my
son interested in line with the fun images. A firm favourite at bedtime! I
would probably expect to pay under £5.00 for this book (£4.99). I would recommend this book. A lovely book to share with my son at
bedtime. We were delighted to receive this book and be able to give a
review. The first day we received it, I
think we read it 3 times in an hour! A firm favourite at bed time. Iain Irvine –

Well laid out with good illustrations. The quality was really good and
professional. The book
details the adventures of Sammy the Squirrel Pirate as he searches for some
treasure. She was really interested to read it after seeing the cover page and
wanted to know what the story was about. I’ve
seen so many children’s books where there a few faded mock-watercolours thrown
in as an afterthought, leaving lots of white paper (OK for an Oxford reader,
but not in a retail book). This book is
very well illustrated and whilst there are actually a few watercolour-like
illustrations, they are generally rich and atmospheric full-page paintings
(especially the night scenes). She was really interested in this book because
of the rhymes. She likes the way the story was told in rhymes. She was really
interested to find out what happens. She
is just learning to read more so this book was just right for her. The story itself is nice and simple,
and flows well. However, it is told as a
poem, which is fine except for the fact that the speed and inflection of some
of the verses seem a bit off. I found
that I struggled on a few pages to keep things consistent (eliciting a gleeful
comment about my reading ability from my little one!). There is also a minor point that the word
‘bum’ is used (DD loved that) when ‘bottom’ would have worked just as well. I
would pay around £5 for a children’s book.
I would actually buy this book and would recommend. Overall
this is a decent book. The few minor
points above do not really detract from the experience too much, and the
illustrations make up for it – just remember to read it yourself first to avoid
any heckling. Krishna Topan – Maya 5 years
