The guide for truly hands-on fathers

So what do you really need to know about breastfeeding? It’s not as if you can actually do it yourself! Breastfeeding is a natural process with huge health benefits to both Mum and baby. However, the milk releasing mechanism can be interrupted by stress. This is unfortunate because looking after a new born baby can be challenging. In Breastfeeding for Dads we show you how to get hands on with the breastfeeding process, how to make yourself indispensable and keep your sense of humour.

Who is the book for?

Erm, the clue’s in the title? But men don’t have breasts – not the interesting type anyway. Whilst Breastfeeding for Dads is aimed squarely at men, complete with cheeky humour and dad jokes, it is also enjoyed by women. It is often bought by women for the men in their lives who want to be hands on with the new baby, but may not be sure how best to go about it. We’ve cut out waffle, facts and extra information you probably don’t need, so a dad-to-be can find the information he needs in one place.

This definitely helped me more prepared for the months ahead. I would read this in the evenings leading up to the birth. I liked how easy it was to read and the layout.

Nice design but could be more eye-catching. Very good idea. Can be daunting for first time dad’s to know where they fit in and how to help. It was very good at teaching a dad how to help out especially in the early stages when the most support is needed. I do agree the book was helpful to us both as a new family. Was a good reference book to help be more prepared on how life will change and what is needed from both of us. My partner did find it very relaxing when I massaged back and neck to clear tension while she was breastfeeding. The section on filling the freezer and suitable food for both of us was a very good idea, especially because I’m not much of a cook. Quality good but would be better as a hardback. With information on offer this is good value.  I would buy this for new dad’s. I would recommend.  Good product. Perhaps could have been a bit better quality in terms of the way it looks. As could easily become tatty over time. A hardback version would be nicer. Nathan Howell – Kallie 7 Weeks

When this arrived though the book looked childlike. I think it’s a great Concept for new dads, especially  for dads that wish to read up on things. I especially liked the section of keeping mums at bay with scary birth stories! The section on baby bonding and support for the mum was good.  As a breastfeeding mum I agree Support and encouragement is the key to successful breast feeding experience.  I personally Believed that the book Delivered on useful information and facts, it was really easy to read without being too stuffy and overwhelming. Loved the section on baby arrival and new challenges.  This section was full of really useful tips, I believe that it would help partners be more supportive, thoughtful and protective of the breast feeding mother.  Having previously breastfed two other babies I’ve learnt to be more vocal about how I can communicate with the Father about breastfeeding and how I feel. So I’m finding it difficult to say this book actually helped me.  But if I take myself back to my first breast feeding experience I could relate to experiences and feeling this book describes. I definitely felt the pressures and worries that new breastfeeding mums feel. The tips are beneficial for both mum and dad as new mums might not know what support they need, this book points about valuable actions such as partner getting mum water while breast feeding etc. I think it’s great how the book emphasises on how stress can affect milk supply I think it’s really important for breastfeeding mums and dads to understand this. My partner and I didn’t use the massage technique. We both found the section on filling the freezer and suitable food beneficial for both of us and found it really useful.  I will be purchasing breastfeeding tea as currently my baby is very hungry and sometimes I find it hard to keep up supply. Love how there are some recipes with that contain the milk boosters.  I’ve added a few of these to my diet and so far so good, milk hasn’t dried up. Also, great that it covered about dieting being counterproductive. I’m one of those mums who want to lose the weight quickly. Have been tempted to go on a diet, but after reading this book changed my mindset on making healthier choices and losing the weigh in a more controlled way. I can see how the book would be helpful and show the dad how to be supportive and be a part of the breast feeding experience.  My partner didn’t read this, but I have read the book and updated my partner on the tips and advice in the book which have been useful. Luckily for me partner is very hands on and supportive, but if that slipped in anyway, I’d hand him the book! I read this book over a couple of days. The way it is written is brilliant, it’s not patronising in anyway. I found myself laughing out loud and found it captures all breastfeeding experiences and gives great advice on how to support your breastfeeding partner and teaches the dad to be Conscientious and think of small things that help make breast feeding easier. The book is good quality and I liked the feel of the pages. I do agree this is good value. I would buy this book but would be dependent on the parents, if I believe they would read it or be interested. I would buy the book for new parents only. I would also recommend this book to new parents.  A light and informative read that is not patronising and Equip starts with the knowledge of how to be supportive through the breastfeeding journey. Grace Sole – Daisy, Lily and Elsie – 10, 8 years and 6 weeks

Looked basic book and front cover could be a bit more appealing to men. Liked the idea of the book as being a first time dad both of us were really not sure what to expect and how much our lives will change. As a new dad you also want to be a major part of your babies development and support your wife during those early months and beyond. It helped me understand how important it is to bond with our baby and understand the extra support my wife will need.  I was relieved I also had the opportunity to take paternity leave so we were there for each other during the first couple of weeks.  Lack of sleep so needed help for both of us on this as really did not realise we would be so tired. The tips and hints in this section and caring for baby were helpful. My wife really did enjoy being massaged while breastfeeding and was calming for her too. The section on food, what to eat and recipe ideas very helpful. I tend to do most of the cooking so this helped me understand what my wife needed in her diet and how to keep us both healthy and able to be there for our son. I received book before my wife gave birth so was good to read in the evening and preparing myself for the imminent birth.  This book has some good tips so will refer to this to remind myself of a few basic tips. This is written in a fun informative way and certainly helped me be more prepared for our son’s arrival. I read in the evening when my wife was relaxing. Good read, good layout and good tips. Quality is good, seems thick enough cover and good paper used. With everything on offer and helping you understand how to work together with a new baby in the home this is worth the money. I would consider buying this for mates who I knew would find this useful. Well written, good tips and helped both of us be prepared for our new son’s arrival.  Jimmy Philpot – Alfie 5 weeks
