The Midwife of Hope River

The Midwife of Hope River By Patricia Harman
As a midwife working in rural poverty during the Depression, Patience Murphy’s only solace is her gift: the chance to escort mothers through the challenges of childbirth. Just beginning, she takes on the jobs no one else wants: those most in need-and least likely to pay. Patience is willing to do what it takes to fulfil her mentor’s wishes, but starting a midwife practice means gaining trust, and Patience’s secrets won’t allow her to let anyone in.The Midwife of Hope River beats with authenticity as Patience faces seemingly insurmountable conditions: disease, poverty, and prejudices threaten at every turn. From the dangerous mines of West Virginia to the terrifying attentions of the Ku Klux Klan, Patience must strive to bring new light, and life, into an otherwise cruel world.

I wasn’t sure about this book at first as it is not my normal type of book but I was proved wrong. The outside quality was very good, inside pages seems slightly cheaper paper. It was very striking and made me want to read the back to find out more. I have never looked at any books like this before. I really enjoyed reading it; it was fabulous. I kept saying just one more story and I will put it down but couldn’t. It was nicely split up but the birth stories and then stories about the main character. It was really well written and took you there so it was easier to imagine what was happening. It is a very good book which is easy to read. The retail is an average price for a book I would say. I would recommend it to others. It is a fabulous book, not what I would normally read but I would definitely recommend it as it was such a good read. Claire Currie – Finlay 3 Years

This book is not one I would pick off a shelf in a book shop, having read the book now it was quite enjoyable. The quality of the book was excellent. I really liked the colour and look of it. I can’t really compare this to any other as I have never looked at this kind of book before. I really enjoyed reading it. It is a great book for the money and I would definitely consider buying it. I would recommend it to other people. Having had my first child 15 months ago this book has made me so thankful for the midwives and doctors who treated me during my labour and delivery. It shows how lucky we are to be living in a time where we have access to modern medicine. I certainly don’t think I would have managed childbirth back then. Joanna Sadecki – Sebastian 15 Months

I really liked the cover on this book when I first saw it. I think it would have attracted me in a book shop. The quality was great. This is not a book I would normally go for but after even the first page, I didn’t want to put it down. I have not seen any others like this but will keep a look out now and hopefully they will be as good as this one. I really enjoyed reading it. It offers great value for money; this is what I pay for other books that I buy. I would recommend it to family and friends. I really enjoyed this book, it’s well written and very easy to read.
