The book looked like it was going to be good; it immediately caught
the attention of my son who was itching to have it read to him. The quality is
excellent. The cover is laminated to protect against grubby fingers and could
probably be wiped clean without damaging the book. The pages are a good quality
grade paper and the colours used are bright and pastel as needed. Matthew loved
the book from the second he was shown it. It immediately caught his attention
and he wanted to read it straightaway. He opened the book and was looking at
all the pictures before it was read to him. It’s a very good book and the author is
obviously very talented and we loved the descriptive adjectives used throughout
and would like to see/read more books like it. My son really enjoyed this book
and we’ve read it a few times since we got it so I’m glad to hear that there
are more books in the series and will definitely be checking that out! The illustrations were very well done and detailed, without even
knowing some of the words in the title my son was able to tell me what the book
was going to be about based on the front cove illustration and this was
continued throughout the book. I had to read it to him as it’s a bit too
advanced for him, but he really enjoyed the book. He loved it and liked that
the pirate overcame his fear of birds by the end of the book. Definitely a
stimulating book! There’s a strong use of descriptive adjectives used
throughout and a build-up of anticipation as to what will happen next that kept
him interested and excited. I enjoyed the story myself it’s very well done and
would be great for teaching the importance of working on your fears to overcome
them. Books can be very expensive and for the quality, the length of the book
and the story itself I think the RRP of £5.99 is a fantastic price especially
for a slightly older child’s book. We’d consider buying this book especially
for birthday presents. In this particular age range it’s hard to find books
that are a bit longer and more age appropriate than those aimed at a younger
age without jumping ahead into book’s that are too long, harder to understand
and not age appropriate. A lot of books aimed at this age group are short and
based on phonics for the child to read themselves so this is a good book to
recommend for parents to read to their child.
A fantastic descriptive story perfect for approx. 4 to 8-year old’s! Serenia Porterfield –

I
thought the book was ok the pictures and story line was good but thought some
of the words would be hard for some children to read or even understand. Think
the book is good but some very hard words. My boys love book they were very
interested to read it but again asked lots of question about what words meant. We all loved the illustrations very clear and
colourful. The book was hard for them as
many of the words were hard for them to understand. A book they can grow into for the future. They thought it was funny that a pirate would
be afraid of birds but did asked lots of questions about words they needed to
have explained like mesmerised, imitations etc.
I feel this book would be more suited to older children. The price is very good for the quality. A good book but personally feel better for
older children. Nikki Fear – Cody & Leo – 4 & 7 Years

Well-presented
and illustrated book, good quality. Title of the book is not particularly
catchy, but the cover illustration was good. Colourful and eye-catching
illustrations throughout, good quality paper, well produced. My son found the
idea of the pirate being afraid of a parrot amusing, and was interested to find
out why this was the case. He thought the illustrations were “good”. Although
book was fairly well written, and I liked that the language was not ‘dumbed
down’ for children, I did not like the tone of the story, and felt the plot was
very rushed and underdeveloped. We did not find the character to be
particularly engaging or interesting. There was potential for this story to be
very amusing, but unfortunately the story did not live up to this. My son
described the character as boring, so would not be keen to read more about him.
Well-illustrated, colourful but my son did not think they were always
interesting, and describes the character of Penny as “a bit odd
looking”. He was happy to read the story once, but refused to look at it
again. He did not find the story very interesting, and wondered why he was
afraid of the woman dressed up as a bird, but not afraid of the real bird. Some
challenging language, but plot is underdeveloped. Not clear who the target
audience of this book would be. It does not have enough humour for younger
children, and the illustrations are possibly not attractive to them, but not
enough plot or character development for children who can read themselves. It
is a nice, well produced book, but we did not enjoy the story. As avid readers,
we were excited to read this book, but were disappointed with the story. Nicola
