Tobbie Robot the self guiding AI Robot DIY

Tobbie is the cutest self guiding Artificial Intelligence Robot we have ever seen. Build Tobbie yourself from push-out plastic pieces, he has 2 modes: ‘Follow me’ where he will follow anything moving (your hand or another Tobbie) and ‘Explore’ where he uses his IR sensor to avoid obstacles. He has lights and sounds as expected from a robot and walks on 6 legs.

Tobbie is a self assembly kit made up of 107 push out and assemble pieces. You will need a good pair of cutters and a filer so that the bits assemble neatly, but follow the instructions and you will build a fully working intelligent robot.

Tobbie is the most amazing teacher of electronics and sensing technology and with a little help most children will have a brilliantly satisfying STEM experience.

16cm tall.

Requires 4 AAA batteries.

It arrived in a bright cardboard box my son was very excited, and well packaged. The instructions were easy to follow with adult help – and checking the numbered item to use. My son is 10yrs old and he found some of the not that easy to put together had to have adult help. But as we got into the build it got easier. The contents are all on a board so you need to cut them off with clippers or scissors this can be done by my son and be made sure it was flush to the part. I think the kit should come with a screwdriver that fits the screws as this would really help. The follow me mode was really fun and entertaining and we laughed a lot, really nice to see it move across the floor, it worked on a hard floor and a carpet floor. My son found the IR sensor so fun and just loved it.  He had a great time with this mode. My son loves electronics he is always playing with his electronic sets so this was a bigger project for him to take on and with adult help making sure the screws were tight and I just checked the parts were correct it was a great project – it says 8+ plus on the box I would say 10yr +. It took us about 1 hour to put together but once completed then my son enjoyed hours of fun. He still plays with it most days and has pride of place in his bedroom. Personally I feel the age group was ideal for my son and would suggest suitable 10 plus. My son loved the making of it as he loves building things and being electronic he was very interested and make sure the wires were in the right place, an hours of fun. I like how it had to be built before play and the fun we had doing it and playing at the end too. The quality was very good all I would say it does need to come with screwdriver. It’s not quiet but with the moving parts it will be noisy. This is very good value. I would buy one as it is great building it up and then having hours of fun. I would definitely recommend this. The item arrived very quickly, it’s great for children to build it before play, you need batteries as it doesn’t come with them, needs an adult to make sure screws are tight, make sure when snipping off the parts you make sure they are flush with the part. It gives parent and child time, my son loved making it and following the instructions with me over seeing them. It was such a great item and the batteries seem to last a long time. I would recommend this to other parents as it’s fun to make and he get an item that you can have loads of fun with. I would say it’s one of his best toys in his collection. Good presentation and the box certainly intrigued my son. I read the instructions and easy enough for me and together we put this together. The parts can be a little tricky to put together but between us it was a great project and we enjoyed seeing the final result. The contents are ideal for the final robot but could do with having a few tools added to make it easier as you can keep them all together. The modes were easy to set up and my son certainly enjoyed the ‘Follow Me’ mode.  It was intriguing to watch it get out of the way of obstacles in the IR mode and the way it moved captured my son’s interest. My son certainly enjoyed the lights and sounds (we were not fans as gets a bit noisy). My son enjoyed setting up a route for Tobbie the Robot to miss all the obstacles Jordan put in his way. I think this toy is brilliant as it not only offers superb entertainment it helped my son explore building and electronics and I have no doubt this will be enhanced more as we look into more toys like this. Great way to excite children about the wonderful world of electronics. This was ideal age for my son but I would say 8 years might be too young, but really depends on how advanced the child is as all children advance in their own time.  Some move along quicker than others. This certainly kept my son entertained and I enjoyed the time building this with my son. This has been played with on a regular basis weekly. My son enjoyed what this robot delivered and found it fascinating how it was programmed and moved.  I liked how we could build it together and the quality and learning this brings with it. The quality is very good, well designed. For what it is and what it delivers yes good value. If I did not already have this I would purchase one.  I have recommended to my brother as his son would love this. This toy delivers fun and education all in one and has been well used in our household. Arthur Tims – Jordan 9 Years

This arrived in a bright coloured box and my daughter could not wait to start building her robot. If we saw this in a toy store presentation of the box would have caught our eye. The instructions were easy enough for Melissa to follow.  She is mad at designing, building, electronics and anything she can make or create or design she is in her element. She did take a while to put together and kept asking for some tools, so would have been ideal if this came with its own little tool set to make the construction easier. The contents are good quality and you have all you need to complete the task in hand. My daughter was delighted with the final result and loved the ‘follow Me’ mode and would spend hours moving around and waving arms to get Tobbie to respond.  The IR sensor was by far her favourite as she lived to see how it would actually miss obstacles in its way.  I think she wanted it to fail as she was always coming up with different routes and putting things in the room for it to avoid. My daughter is already mad on electronics and building so this was the perfect toy for her.  It certainly improves her knowledge of electronics and technology and helped her to explore more and ask more questions.  Well dad would answer these for her, but great to see how it sparked her interest.  Most definitely kept her entertained. I would say the age suitability is ideal. She loved how it worked and the fact it was bright yellow too. I liked how much pleasure and fun it gave my daughter.  Quality is very good cannot fault it.  Only wish with these sort of toys they supply the batteries as it just makes it quicker and easier to set up.  For what this is it certainly represents good value. I will be buying this for my nephew and have already recommended to a few friends. My daughter really enjoyed this and still goes back to it every week.  It is permanently in her room as she just loves the look of her Tobbie robot.  Well worth investing in as will deliver so much fun.
