When I Was Joe Book

When Ty witnesses the knife murder of another boy he identifies some very dangerous people and the police put him and his mother into hiding in a witness protection scheme. While they are packing, a petrol bomb is thrown through the front door of their flat, highlighting the extreme danger they face. Over the coming months, Ty becomes Joe, is given a new look and starts at a new school. To his surprise, he finds he is attracting the attention of the girls in his class, and the boys find his need to conceal his real identity cool – being Joe is not so bad. His ability as a runner is spotted and he starts training under a college student, a wheelchair user who is a Paralympics contender, but this special treatment attracts resentment. Somehow Joe keeps drawing attention to himself despite his efforts to remain anonymous. Then his beloved grandmother back in London is badly injured in an attack designed to flush Ty out of hiding and demonstrates the relentless determination to silence him.
This wonderfully gripping and intelligent novel movingly depicts Ty/Joe’s confusing sense of identity in extreme danger – a remarkable debut from a great new writing talent.

I thought the book looked very readable because it had an attractive and eye catching front cover. The quality of the book is as expected, very good. My child liked the look of the books cover; a child of this age quite often seems to judge a book by its cover. It was a very enjoyable read and it relates well to today’s society. My daughter found the book very stimulating and classes it as a ‘must read’. Overall, it’s a book that is related to today’s society and it is easy to read and understand. The book looked very exciting on first appearance and my child wanted to start reading it straight away. very good quality book which means a lot when it is a book for a 12 year old boy to have in his possession as anything flimsy would not last 5 minutes. The picture on the front of the book gave an image to base the book on, which made it more understandable. He couldn’t put it down because he was always intrigued as to what was going to happen next, very good as it is not easy to keep a 12 year olds attention. Great story from start to finish, his friend has asked to borrow it as he was always talking about it. A very good story that remains interesting throughout the whole book. If I had bought this book it would have been worth every penny! A very exciting read that is hard to put down. Sue Williams – Jake 12 Years

A striking and interesting cover that my Son loved. It’s a good quality paperback and Benjamin can’t wait for the sequel! My Son is not usually a great lover of books but I found him reading this an hour after he was supposed to be asleep. The story was very good; he didn’t want to stop reading it. The book is stimulating and exciting, offering good value for money. I would definitely buy it and have already recommended it to people. A brilliant book, that is not just for children. I thoroughly enjoyed it too and had to make myself put it down to get on with the cleaning! My 14 year old Daughter also enjoyed reading it too. “When I Was Joe” is a brilliant book! We can’t wait for the sequel! Anne Johnson – Benjamin 12 Years
