Graco sheds light on how families really feel around mealtimes

As part of its One Family campaign, Graco is sharing its latest insight on family nutrition and feeding families, with expert tips from paediatric dietitian Lucy Upton.

Picky Eating

So many of us have been here. One of the most striking findings of Graco’s latest survey relates to the emotional impact of children refusing food. Nearly half of parents surveyed said they felt anxious or worried when their child refused to eat, while only 15 percent said they felt fine.

Lucy said:
“Remember, eating during weaning is a learning process, and babies often refuse foods for a variety of reasons, including learning to like them, developing the skills to actually eat them, teething, illness and more. Try to avoid pressure or forcing and continue to expose your baby to a variety of foods while modelling how to eat them too.”

The Cost of Healthy Eating

Financial pressures are also shaping how families approach nutrition. 44 percent of parents believe feeding their baby a healthier diet is more expensive, and 14 percent admitted they’ve had to compromise on food quality due to budget constraints. These figures highlight the difficult trade-offs many families are forced to make, particularly in the current economic climate.

Information Overload

With increased awareness around food comes increased confusion. 61 percent of parents said they feel overwhelmed by the amount of information available on what constitutes good’ or ‘bad’ food.

Lucy says:
“If you’re feeling overwhelmed about what to feed your baby when starting solids, you’re not alone! The good news is that there is so much more babies can eat than they can’t – and offering as
much variety as possible is key. Variety helps your baby get used to different flavours and
textures and it also ensures they’re getting a broad range of nutrients needed for healthy
growth and development.”
