When thinking of the places where you’re guaranteed to find satisfied parents, our minds often wander to Scandinavia or the Netherlands – after all, they have some of the best social welfare for parents there is. But is this reflected in their happiness levels?

Andrex, who has recently launched a potty training app, wanted to explore this further and decided to analyse more than 9,000 pictures of parents from across Europe and the US for signs of happiness. Using an emotion detection tool, the researchers were able to discover where in the world parents expressed the most happiness in pictures by giving them a score between 0-100.

Key findings:

  • The top 3 countries with the highest happiness scores for parents are Scotland, Ireland and England with Wales ranking as number 6.
  • England has the happiest fathers, with Scotland and Ireland to follow.
  • Ireland and Scotland top the list of the happiest mothers, too.

Potty training with Andrex

Andrex has launched a new potty training app, called Go Time, which is an interactive book designed for pre-school kids as young as 3 years old to make potty training more fun.

Methodology

  • The analysis considered a total of 9,000 images depicting parents across 43 European countries and the US sourced through Google Images.
  • To find these images we used relevant search queries such as ‘selfie of mother in France’ ‘selfie of father in Belgium’ for each country. Each image was then analysed with Amazon Web Services (AWS) Rekognition API to analyse each image’s emotional score, focusing on a happiness rating out of 100.
  • The AI tool works by scanning clear photos of faces and detecting the level of emotion present with a score out of 100.
  • The images were found and analysed by the relevant tools on September 12th 2023.
