Charlie Dog by Sue Pavey & Eleni Demetriou

Charlie Dog is the perfect story for the beginning reader. It is rich with sight words, which are so important for children at this stage of reading and comprehension. This book will boost your child’s confidence, as they will find many words that are easy to recognize and sound out. Eleni Demetriou’s illustrations are engaging, but do not distract the new reader, allowing them to enjoy the story through pictures while focusing on the words.Author Sue Pavey has done a brilliant job integrating the child’s imagination with her main character Charlie. At this age, children’s play is rich with imagination. A child may pretend to be several different things or be in several different places in a single day’s imaginative play. Charlie’s world is very similar. While reading, you can see children trying to guess how Charlie gets so dirty. In the end, your child smiles when the simple truth is revealed.  It seems Charlie and children have a lot in common. Suitable from birth – 5 years

Lovely looking book, very cute dog. We are great animal lovers and treat our pets as part of the family so looked forward to sharing with Izzy. The pages to me did not feel very robust at all. Not sure they would withstand the constant page turning and not rip. My daughter loved to look at all the pictures and take her time flipping back and forth between the pages. My daughter took to this book right away. Gorgeous illustrations. Really simple and relatable too. My daughter could work out pretty much every time what the dog was doing and where. She enjoyed us reading the story to her. Izzy loved the story and found it very relatable. The final page where we were told Charlie was dirty because he had been in the garden and dug it all, up, she got used to exclaiming “just like me” – she is heavily into building mud pies at the moment despite our best efforts to discourage her so it made her laugh that Charlie was just like her! My daughter did really engage with the story. It is very short, simple and repetitive which in one way is good for her with her current attention span. I liked the book very much. The images were lovely even to me as an adult reader. The book is very short though so as a bedtime story, we had to concede and read it to Izzy twice over every time. My husband who also did some of the bedtime story reading of this book mentioned that he found the repetitive nature of the verse/story a bit tedious – then he saw the photo and the real story of ‘Charlie’ at the back of the book and felt guilty for criticising it! To be honest, in a review situation, we found it hard to criticise a story created in honour and loving memory of a much loved pet – especially as we are such animal lovers! It really does colour your perception and gives us as parents and animal lovers a ‘mushy’ feeling. I am not sure really if this is value for money. The story itself is very short. The qualities
of the illustrations are lovely so I guess you would have to be mindful that you are paying for the artwork. It is almost like the story is an afterthought, designed to fit the drawings. I would certainly look out for other books in the series. We have had this book out on the coffee table during the review and visitors (adults and children) have picked it up and gushed over Charlie dog. A very relatable character all round – most common comment is “oh how cute!” I think our family has developed a soft spot for Charlie dog and his adventures.
Izzy likes the mischief he gets up to and really relates to it. The only aside is that my daughter does get Charlie dog mixed up with the Childrens character Charlie Bear which can confuse people – she asks for the Charlie bear story when she means this book! An adorable character which my daughter has become quite attached to. Karen Oliver – Izzy 3 Years

Nicely presented with clear words and large pictures. Paper feels different to usual so perhaps wouldn’t be marked as easily by crayons etc.? We didn’t test it! Abigail was interested as it was a new book but hasn’t picked it to read since. She will read it if I pick it.  Illustrations were clear and took up most of the page. She did enjoy reading it but hasn’t picked it to read since. She seemed to like the story and could describe what was happening in the pictures. I feel there are too few words and the story is too short and simple. This is a good book but should be aimed more at children starting to read for themselves. The story itself was too short and simple to interest my daughter and the book was over too quickly. Quite expensive compared to similar books. If Abigail were older and starting to read. Also would probably only purchase if in the sale or reduced price. A good book with few words suitable for children just learning to read. Lisa Taylor – Abigail 2 years 6 Months

Very basic, I didn’t think it captured the attention of my 2 year old – just from looking at the cover. I personally found the book flimsy. I don’t think it did inspire him to look at it. The hand drawn sketch on the front in dull colours didn’t draw him in. The illustrations were
good and not like any other book he has, that are all computer generated images. They explained exactly what was being told in the story. But they didn’t draw at attention. Despite my reservations, my son enjoyed me reading the story to him and spoke highly of Charlie Dog after I had finished reading. Although I have read the book to him on multiple occasions, it is not a book he has asked to be read. He knew that Charlie was a naughty dog so the story explained that in simple terms. The cover does not draw the attention of
my child, the illustrations are too plain and the story is too short. I would not buy or recommend this book. Personally I feel this book lacks the fun factor for children. Katie Gerrard – James 2 Years
